Why skin can feel drier, duller or more reactive by the end of summer
Summer skincare tends to focus on protection - SPF, antioxidants, lightweight layers. Keeping skin comfortable through heat, sweat and longer days outdoors.
But as we move through the later weeks of summer, you may notice something changing. Skin that felt relatively balanced at the beginning of the season can start to feel drier, duller, more sensitive or simply a little less resilient than usual.
It isn't necessarily one thing causing the shift. Often, it's the cumulative effect of summer itself.
What happens to skin over the course of summer?
Our skin is constantly responding to its environment, and summer brings a particular combination of demands.
Sun exposure
Even with diligent SPF use, summer usually means more time outdoors and greater exposure to UV and environmental stress.
UV exposure can contribute to oxidative stress within the skin and, over time, affect collagen, pigmentation and the skin's ability to retain a smooth, even appearance.
This is why sun protection remains important throughout the season - not only on the hottest or sunniest days.
Heat, sweat and repeated cleansing
Warmer weather often means more perspiration, more frequent cleansing and more time washing away layers of SPF. All of that can change how skin feels.
For some people, summer means increased oiliness and congestion. For others, repeated cleansing combined with heat and environmental exposure can leave skin feeling tight, uncomfortable or more easily irritated.
Air-conditioning
We associate dry skin with winter, but heavily air-conditioned environments can have a similar effect.
Air-conditioning lowers humidity, which can contribute to moisture loss from the skin - particularly if you are moving frequently between hot outdoor temperatures and cool, dry indoor spaces.
Swimming, travel and changes in routine
Summer is also the season when our usual rhythms tend to change. Chlorinated pools, flights, hotel air-conditioning, different climates and later nights can all alter the environment our skin is used to.
None of these things needs to be a problem in isolation, but together they can help explain why skin sometimes feels very different by late summer.
The signs your skin may need something different
This seasonal shift does not look the same for everyone.
You might notice:
- skin feeling tight soon after cleansing
- areas of dryness that weren't there earlier in summer
- a duller or less even-looking complexion
- increased sensitivity or reactivity
- fine dehydration lines appearing more noticeable
- skin feeling less soft, supple or comfortable
- richer products suddenly feeling more appealing than they did a few weeks ago
Rather than interpreting this as skin that needs to be aggressively "fixed", it can be more useful to think about replenishing what the season has taken out.
So, what does skin need next?
Late summer is a good moment to reassess rather than completely overhaul your routine.
1. Bring hydration back to the centre
Hydration is not just about making skin feel softer. Water and lipids both play important roles in maintaining a comfortable, functioning skin barrier, so this is the time to pay attention if skin feels increasingly tight or dehydrated.
Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid alongside nourishing oils and emollients that help skin retain moisture.
2. Support the skin barrier
When skin feels reactive, the answer is not always another active ingredient.
A simpler routine focused on gentle cleansing, hydration and moisturisation can give the skin barrier the support it needs.
If your skin feels particularly sensitised, consider temporarily reducing aggressive exfoliation or introducing several new actives at once.
3. Keep protecting
The move towards repair does not mean sun protection stops. UVA exposure continues year-round, so daily SPF remains part of supporting healthy skin even as temperatures start to change. Think of late-summer skincare as an addition rather than a replacement: protect by day, replenish and support by night.
4. Reintroduce nourishment gradually
The very lightweight moisturiser that felt perfect during a heatwave may not provide quite enough as conditions begin to shift.
This is where a slightly more nourishing moisturiser can start to earn its place again - particularly in the evening.

Think transition, not transformation
Perhaps the most useful thing you can do for your skin at the end of summer is pay attention to what it's telling you.
You don't need to suddenly move into a heavy winter routine because the calendar is changing. Instead, make small adjustments.
Add back a little more moisture. Keep protecting skin during the day. Introduce renewal slowly where it feels appropriate. And prioritise products that leave skin feeling comfortable rather than stripped.
Summer isn't over. But after weeks of sun, heat, travel and changing routines, your skin may already be asking for a little more support.
Now is the time to replenish - and prepare it for the season ahead.
