What Organic Skincare means at Nourish London and why formulation still matters
Know what goes on your skin
Every September, Organic September gives us an opportunity to look a little more closely at the choices we make every day.
When it comes to skincare, that begins with a deceptively simple question:
Do you know what goes on your skin?
Ingredient lists have never been more visible. We know the names of actives, compare percentages and increasingly look beyond the front of the bottle before deciding what belongs in our routines.
But understanding skincare means looking further still.
Where did those ingredients come from? How were they grown and processed? What does organic certification actually guarantee? And once the ingredients arrive in the laboratory, how are they combined into a formula that is safe, stable and genuinely useful to the skin?
At Nourish London, those questions have always belonged together.
Our approach brings together certified organic ingredients and natural materials with evidence-led science - because choosing thoughtfully sourced ingredients is important, but what a formulator does with them matters just as much.
What does certified organic skincare actually mean?
Organic beauty can be confusing.
Words such as natural, green and organic appear widely across beauty and personal care, but beauty products are not regulated as organic in the same way as food. Independent certification therefore provides an important additional standard for customers trying to understand what they are buying.
Nourish London works with Soil Association Certification, which certifies cosmetic products to the internationally recognised COSMOS standard.
For products carrying COSMOS Organic certification, standards cover more than the presence of one or two organic ingredients. They set requirements around organic agricultural ingredients and also consider areas including sourcing, processing, formulation and manufacturing. Certified businesses and manufacturing processes are subject to ongoing assessment.
So when you see independent certification on a skincare product, it gives you something that a marketing claim alone cannot:
a standard that has been independently checked.
This is why you'll see certification marks displayed proudly across Nourish London products and on our website.
Organic and natural don't mean exactly the same thing
This distinction matters. An organic ingredient is linked to how an agricultural ingredient has been grown and processed. A natural-origin ingredient describes something different.
And not every useful skincare ingredient can be “organic”.
Water cannot be organically farmed. Neither can minerals, salts or clays.
This means some formulations containing large proportions of these materials cannot meet the same organic-content requirements as products based more heavily on agricultural ingredients. Where appropriate, products can instead be certified to the COSMOS Natural standard.
That's why looking for genuine certification is more informative than simply looking for the word natural.
It also helps explain something central to the Nourish philosophy:
good formulation isn't about chasing the highest possible number of fashionable claims. It's about choosing the right ingredients for the job.
Why ingredients still matter
None of this diminishes the importance of ingredient quality. Botanical ingredients are extraordinary raw materials.
Plant oils, extracts and other naturally derived ingredients can provide fatty acids, antioxidants, emollients and a wide range of compounds with useful properties in skincare.
But “natural” alone doesn't tell us how an ingredient will behave.
Plants vary according to species, growing conditions and harvest. Extracts can differ according to how they are processed. Purity, concentration and stability matter. And an ingredient that looks impressive on an INCI list still needs to be present in an appropriate form and amount to contribute meaningfully to the finished product.
This is why Nourish London doesn't choose ingredients simply because they make a good story.
We ask what role each ingredient has within the formula.
Why formulation matters just as much
It's easy to talk about skincare as a collection of hero ingredients.
Retinal. Peptides. Argan. Hyaluronic acid. Vitamin C.
But your skin never receives an ingredient in isolation. It receives a finished formulation. And a successful formulation depends on far more than a compelling ingredient list.
Concentration matters.
Compatibility matters.
Stability matters.
Preservation matters.
The pH of a formula can matter. Its texture and delivery system can matter. Even the experience of using a product matters, because a technically impressive formula will achieve very little sitting untouched on a bathroom shelf.
Ingredients must also work together.
An oil may help support softness and comfort while a humectant helps attract water. Antioxidants may be selected to complement one another. Supporting ingredients help keep a formula stable, safe and pleasant to use throughout its intended life.
This is why we think about formulations as complete systems, rather than a vehicle for one fashionable active.
Natural ingredients deserve serious science
There can sometimes be an assumption in beauty that “natural” and “scientific” sit on opposite sides of a divide.
We don't see it that way.
Nourish London founder and formulator Dr Pauline Hili has spent decades working across chemistry, cosmetic science and botanical research. Her research has included doctoral work into the antimicrobial properties of essential oils and collaboration investigating the effects of plant extracts on collagen and elastin.
That background has shaped a straightforward philosophy:
natural ingredients deserve the same scientific scrutiny as any other skincare ingredient.
Their origin may begin in nature. Understanding how to use them responsibly belongs to science.
It's why Nourish London formulations consider not only what an ingredient is, but how it interacts with the rest of the formula, how it remains stable and how it can best serve the needs of the skin.
A better standard for skin
For us, Organic September is about transparency. Independent organic certification gives us a meaningful standard for how ingredients are sourced and products are made.
Ingredient knowledge helps us select materials for a reason.
And formulation science allows us to turn those materials into skincare designed to perform as a complete product.
Together, they create an approach Nourish London has followed from the beginning:
Grown by nature. Formulated by us. Independently certified.
So this Organic September, we're encouraging you to look beyond the front of the bottle.
Ask where your ingredients come from. Look for standards you can trust. Understand what your skin needs.
And remember that the best skincare doesn't ask you to choose between nature and science.
Certified organic ingredients. Proven natural science.
