Yoghurt has a long association with skin and beauty rituals, and modern cosmetic science has found a scientific basis for that heritage. Fermenting live Lactobacillus bulgaricus, the classic yoghurt culture, under controlled stress conditions prompts the bacteria to secrete stress-response elements that can be harvested and purified for topical use.
This blended bioferment is a clear to slightly hazy, semi-viscous, water-soluble liquid, with the INCI name Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate Filtrate. Despite the name, this ingredient is not derived from dairy or any animal source. The Lactobacillus bulgaricus culture is grown and fermented under laboratory conditions, and it is the bacterial ferment itself that is harvested and purified. "Yoghurt" in the ingredient name refers to the bacterium's traditional culinary role, not to any dairy content in the finished material, making it suitable for use in vegan formulations.
How It Works
The material works by delivering bacterial stress-response elements, sometimes described as heat-shock or stress proteins, to the skin. Given the biological similarity between microbial and human cells, these elements are thought to help reduce or reverse cellular stress when applied topically.
Independent scientific literature on related Lactobacillus lysates supports this broader mechanism. Lysates from Lactobacillus rhamnosus have been shown to increase expression of tight-junction proteins and skin barrier proteins in reconstructed human epidermis models (Jung et al., 2019), while other fermented Lactobacillus lysate blends have demonstrated reduced transepidermal water loss and redness in clinical use (Cui et al., 2023).
