What Is Tocopherol?
Vitamin E is a group of fat-soluble compounds, with alpha-tocopherol being the most biologically active form for human skin. It is naturally present in both the epidermis and dermis, and is commonly found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds.
How It Works
Vitamin E works directly inside the lipid layers of skin cells to help intercept damage before it spreads.
Because it is fat-soluble, Vitamin E positions itself directly inside cell membranes, where it acts as an efficient scavenger of hydroperoxyl radicals (Thiele & Ekanayake-Mudiyanselage, 2007). When it neutralises a free radical, Vitamin E gives up an electron, becoming a temporarily spent alpha-tocopheroxyl radical.
This spent Vitamin E can then be refreshed by water-soluble antioxidants such as Vitamin C and cellular thiols, which donate an electron back, resetting it to continue defending the skin barrier (Di Mascio, Murphy & Sies, 1991).
Why Formulation Matters
Despite its reputation, delivering Vitamin E's benefits to skin is a genuine formulation challenge. Its penetration and bioconversion in human skin are highly dependent on delivery method, not just raw concentration (Thiele & Ekanayake-Mudiyanselage, 2007).
Being highly oil-soluble, raw Vitamin E can struggle to move into water-rich skin layers, often sitting on the surface rather than absorbing. It is also highly sensitive to light and oxygen, and can oxidise and degrade before it has a chance to work (Fernandes et al., 2024).
Careful handling, including controlled temperatures, protected processing and stable delivery systems, is what determines whether Vitamin E performs as intended or arrives at the skin already compromised (Kouassi, Grisel & Gore, 2022).
Scientific Notes
Vitamin E has a natural reset mechanism. After neutralising a free radical it becomes temporarily inactive, but pairing it with Vitamin C allows an electron to be donated back, restoring its antioxidant capacity. This is why tocopherol and ascorbic acid are frequently formulated together.
