What Is Soybean Oil?

The skin's outermost layer relies on a delicate mix of lipids to stay hydrated, flexible and resistant to irritants. When that lipid balance is disrupted, through age, weather, over-cleansing or dry skin conditions, moisture escapes and the barrier weakens.

Soybean oil (Glycine soja oil) is a fixed vegetable oil extracted from soybean seeds, composed mainly of triacylglycerols, combinations of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. It is dominated by linoleic acid, with meaningful amounts of oleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, alongside naturally occurring tocopherols (vitamin E) and phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol.

How It Works

Linoleic acid is a structural component of skin ceramides, the lipids that hold the epidermis together and prevent water from escaping. A deficiency in linoleic acid has been linked to a weakened barrier and increased transepidermal water loss.

The oil's natural tocopherol content helps neutralise reactive oxygen species generated by UV exposure and pollution, limiting the oxidative damage that accelerates visible ageing. Topical application of linoleic-acid-rich oils has also been associated with reduced inflammatory markers in skin studies, making soybean oil a gentle option even for reactive or sensitised skin.

As it is lighter and less occlusive than oleic-dominant oils, soybean oil hydrates without the heaviness that can trigger congestion in oilier skin types.

Why Formulation Matters

Not all soybean oil performs the same way on skin, and that comes down to two things: the genetic origin of the cultivar and how the oil is processed.

Recent lipidomic work profiling multiple Chinese soybean cultivars found that genetic background significantly shapes the TAG profile of the resulting oil, which in turn governs melting behaviour and functional performance, reinforcing that not every "soybean oil" on a spec sheet is equivalent (Korma et al., 2026).

Separate NMR-based analysis across 32 soybean varieties confirmed that triacylglycerol fingerprints differ meaningfully between cultivars, and that this variation can be used to verify origin and detect adulteration, a useful quality-control layer for sourcing cosmetic-grade oil (Kim et al., 2013).

Because linoleic and linolenic acids contain multiple double bonds in the less stable cis configuration, unrefined soybean oil is prone to oxidation if not properly stabilised and stored, which can shorten shelf life or generate off-notes in a finished formula.

Scientific Notes

Comparative varietal studies have found real spread in fatty acid composition even within the same species. In one analysis of Korean soybean varieties, linolenic acid content ranged up to around 19% in wild soybean, linoleic acid reached as high as around 50% in one cultivar, and oleic acid peaked at around 34% in another (Kim et al., 2013). This variability is why sourcing and batch-testing matter as much as the INCI name itself when soybean oil is chosen for a cosmetic formulation.
