What Is Rosehip Oil?
Pressed from the seeds and fruit of the dog rose (Rosa canina), rosehip oil has been used as a skin remedy for generations, long before "vitamin C" and "essential fatty acids" were part of the everyday skincare vocabulary.
Rosehip oil, also called rosehip seed oil, is extracted from the fruit and seeds of the Rosa canina shrub, a member of the rose family. Unlike rose oil, which comes from the petals, rosehip oil is pressed from the pseudo-fruit and seed left once the bloom has faded. It is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, chiefly linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, alongside vitamin C, vitamin A precursors, and a range of plant pigments and polyphenols.
How It Works
Rosehip oil's effects on skin come from several complementary mechanisms working together.
Its high linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid content helps reinforce cell membranes within the skin barrier, supporting hydration and reducing water loss. Rosehip oil is also naturally rich in vitamin C, a nutrient known to play a vital role in the body's collagen-production process, and vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant in its own right (Kumar et al., 2025).
Alongside vitamin C, rosehip carries meaningful levels of polyphenols, flavonoids and carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene, which together help neutralise free radicals generated by everyday environmental exposure. Certain flavonoids in rosehip have also been studied for their ability to interfere with the enzyme responsible for excess melanin production, which is of interest for uneven tone and dark spots.
Why Formulation Matters
Rosehip oil's benefits are real, but they are also fragile. As a highly polyunsaturated oil, it is chemically predisposed to going rancid faster than more saturated plant oils, so handling, packaging and storage conditions directly affect whether its actives are still intact by the time it is applied.
Total phenolic and bioactive content differs meaningfully between the pulp, seed and whole fruit, and between extraction methods, so consistent sourcing matters for a predictable result. Because of its oxidation sensitivity, formulations built around rosehip oil benefit from protective packaging and storage away from heat and light.
Careful sourcing and formulation are what determine whether rosehip oil arrives at the skin as an active, nutrient-dense oil, or as an oxidised one that has lost much of what made it worth using in the first place.

Rosehip's antioxidant strength has been confirmed in lab assays, with extracts showing radical-scavenging activity in DPPH testing comparable to reference antioxidants, alongside strong reducing capacity in FRAP testing (Kumar et al., 2025).
In an eight-week clinical trial, daily oral rosehip supplementation was associated with a measurable reduction in wrinkle depth and an increase in skin elasticity, alongside separate research linking rosehip's flavonoids to reduced activity of enzymes that break down collagen. This trial measured effects from oral supplementation, not topical application; the mechanisms described above, barrier support and antioxidant activity, form the basis for its use in topical skincare.
