What Is Jojoba Oil?
Few plant oils sit as comfortably in skincare formulations as jojoba oil. Technically a liquid wax rather than a true oil, it shares a structural resemblance to skin's own sebum that few botanical ingredients can match.
Jojoba oil is derived from the seed of Simmondsia chinensis, a hardy, drought-resistant shrub native to the desert regions of North and Central America. Traditionally used by Native American communities, jojoba has long been valued as both a nutritional and topical remedy, and is cultivated today across countries including Mexico, Chile, India, Egypt, South Africa and Argentina.
How It Works
Jojoba oil's effectiveness on skin comes down to both its unique chemical make-up and its close resemblance to the skin's own natural oils.
Jojoba's low viscosity, high molecular weight and structural similarity to sebum allow it to sit comfortably on skin, helping to reduce excess epidermal cell shedding and ease dryness without a greasy after-feel. Rather than simply coating the skin, it helps regulate moisture loss and reduce evaporation, while still allowing gases and water vapour to pass through, supporting hydration without suffocating the skin.
Jojoba is naturally rich in vitamin E, helping to reduce cellular damage caused by everyday oxidative stress. Research also points to jojoba increasing the synthesis of procollagen III and hyaluronic acid, key contributors to skin firmness, elasticity and moisture retention (Tietel et al., 2024). Laboratory research using a human skin model found jojoba wax reduced key markers of inflammation, supporting its traditional use for soothing redness-prone and reactive skin (Tietel et al., 2024).
Why Formulation Matters
Compared with heavier occlusives like petrolatum or lanolin, jojoba offers a lighter, non-greasy glide in emulsions, but the ratio still needs balancing against other emollients to avoid an overly slippery finish.
Jojoba's benefits, including its anti-inflammatory activity, have been shown to be enhanced when combined with the right emulsifying systems, making formulation technique as important as the raw ingredient itself.
Jojoba's chemistry also allows it to help dissolve certain hard-to-formulate antioxidants, meaning it can serve as a delivery vehicle for other active ingredients within a formula, not just as a standalone moisturiser.
Scientific Notes
Jojoba oil's chemical structure, including long-chain monounsaturated esters, fatty acids, alkyl esters and triglycerides, sets it apart from more conventional plant oils (Pappas, 2009). Among its fatty acids are erucic and nervonic acid, omega-9 monounsaturated compounds that, like oleic acid, can help other ingredients move more easily through the skin's lipid layers. This is one reason jojoba is sometimes formulated alongside other actives, not only to moisturise on its own but to help support their delivery.
