Sweet Almond Oil: Rich, Protective Emollience

Sweet almond oil is a rich and nourishing oil that helps protect and leaves the skin feeling cushioned and comfortable. It acts as a delicate emollient, helping to lock in hydration and support the skin's barrier.

As Dr Pauline Hili, Nourish London's founder and formulator, explains: "It was one of the very first emollient oils I used when starting out as a formulator, and I still use it today for the very same reasons, the texture and feel it gives to formulas, and the protection it offers the skin."

Benefits

Deeply moisturises dry, flaky skin Supports skin barrier function Provides antioxidant support Soothes sensitive, stressed skin Easy to formulate into lightweight textures

Best For

Dry skin Sensitive skin Stressed skin

What Is Almond Oil (Sweet)?

Sweet almond oil is composed of oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic and stearic acid, phytosterols and vitamin E. This lightweight oil provides a broad range of skin-protecting functions in a formulation.

Vegetable oils rich in vitamin E help support the skin's antioxidant defences and contribute to a soft, supple feel (Ouzir et al., 2021). At Nourish London, only Soil Association approved organic almond oil is used.

How It Works

Almond oil is an excellent emollient that helps reduce water loss from the skin and supports barrier function. In doing so, it helps smooth rough skin and improve overall skin texture, while also offering antioxidant support.

Why Formulation Matters

As a natural oil, care should be taken not to over-heat almond oil during production processing, since this can affect its integrity. Including antioxidants in the formulation helps protect and preserve the oil, supporting a stable, effective finished product.

Scientific Notes

A 2024 review of topical plant oils supports almond oil's role as an effective emollient that helps reduce transepidermal water loss and supports skin barrier function, consistent with its use across Nourish London's formulations (Noveir et al., 2024).
