Why & How To Use a Serum?
S – Serum
We are often asked how can I get more out of my skincare? Are there any products I can add to my routine that will help improve my skin faster? My moisturiser performance has plateaued – how can I improve it?
The simplest answer to all of the questions above is to add a serum to your routine.
Serums provide potent, targeted actives in a gel-like texture that aids absorption and rapid delivery to where it is needed most.
E - Environment
Serums provide great help for whatever environment and condition your skin finds itself in.
Serums can help tackle specific concerns with focused ingredients in optimum concentrations. Some examples of the issues that specific serums are great at tackling include:
- Hyperpigmentation
- Dull Pallor/Tone
- Acne-prone skin
- Sun damage
- Wrinkles and lack of plumpness
- Elasticity
- Chronic dryness
- Sensitivity
- Reduce oiliness
- Calm redness

R - Routine
How to incorporate your serum into your skincare routine? The experience of adding a serum to your routine can be daunting. The Nourish London serums have been formulated to be flexibly added to any skincare routine.
We recommend that serums are applied after the exfoliating, cleansing and toning steps. Our serums can be applied am or pm depending on the key benefit of the serum. For example, brightening serums are ideally used during your am routine.
When using serums for the first time, it is important to slowly incorporate into routine. When using serums, the advice is generally to use them after cleansing before moisturising. The logic being that serums are generally the thinnest product, often water-based, and by applying the moisturiser you can lock in actives into the skin.
Our experience has taught us that in some cases it is better to apply the serum over the moisturiser. If you have sensitive skin and applying a serum first increases redness and sensitivity, it is best to apply over moisturiser. If you’re using your serum as a priming base for mineral make-up, it is best as the last step.
We have found that applying a moisturiser over a serum give a more matt look and applying a serum over a moisturiser gives a more dewy look. Besides, for the instant benefits of brightening serums, they are best put over moisturiser.
Apply a pea sized amount of serum with your fingertip to the face with gentle movements patting and smoothing it out. If time permits, use of a Jade Roller or Gua Sha can help to improve absorption.
U - Use
When using a serum, remember that your skin is unique and not all skin types react the same way. Be prepared to alter your routine to find what is optimum for your skin.
M - Moisturiser
Serums can be used in conjunction with moisturisers am and pm to address specific skin issues. They improve and boost the hydrating effects of your moisturiser and work synergistically to improve texture and tone of the skin.
