Your Guide to the Best Skin Vitamins

Consuming a diet of vitamin-rich foods and using vitamin powered skincare helps to optimise the health of both your body and your skin.

Our founder, Dr Pauline Hili explains that whilst there is no magic bullet against ageing, we can improve the health, vitality and resiliency of our bodies and our skin by incorporating the right nutrients into our daily routines.

Topical vitamins have 3 major actions on the skin:

  • Anti-Ageing
  • Protection
  • Detoxifying

Applying vitamins topically via skincare has been proven in clinical testing to be more beneficial for the skin than just absorbing vitamins from our diets.

For example, with Vitamin C, 30-40% more is attained through topical application of vitamin-rich cream to the skin than by ingestion alone.

This is because when you take vitamins internally, they get shared by all your other organs. When applied to the skin in proper concentration, they go straight where they are needed.

Holiday tip: if you are going away this Summer, Dr Hili recommends using a topical product rich in Vitamin C, starting a week before your trip. This will top up the skinʼs own reservoir of antioxidants which will help to prevent skin damage whilst you are away.

To start with, let’s take a look at Vitamins A, B, C & E. These vitamins promote healthy skin tissue, maintaining the youthfulness of the skin and supporting the skinʼs own protective barrier.

Vitamin A

Nourish London Vitamin Powered Natural Skincare: Vitamin A

Vitamin A keeps our cell membranes healthy. It plumps the skin, reducing lines and wrinkles, fades pigmentation and smooths down roughness.

We don't use retinol in our products but instead use natural sources of vitamin A such as Kale, Rosehip seed oil and Pumpkin seed oil which is much more gentle on the skin than its synthetic counterparts and is particularly effective used at night supporting your skinʼs own natural repair process.

Vitamin B (B3, B5, B7, B12)

This group of powerful water-soluble vitamins are all instrumental in cell metabolism, helping to promote naturally healthy skin. Often found together in nature, they detoxify, rebalance and also increase the production of ceramides. Ceramides help hold skin cells together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against visible damage from pollution and other environmental stressors.

B Vitamins also control sebum production by regulating enzyme activity in the skin.

Vitamin C

An extremely strong antioxidant with renowned protective properties, Vitamin C is required by skin to produce enzymes, and has a direct role to play in collagen synthesis. It is also important for wound healing and has corrective properties against photo ageing and UV damage. Very easily destroyed by smoke, pollution, UV exposure, it’s therefore essential to replenish your skin’s Vitamin C reserves.

Vitamin E

Nourish London Vitamin Powered Natural Skincare: Vitamin E

This fat soluble vitamin is a protective antioxidant and, similar to Vitamin C, it depletes with sun exposure and is not made by the body. Used by the skin to enhance its protective layer, Vitamin E is renowned for its reparative and antioxidant properties. The good news is, you can top up the skin’s Vitamin E stores through topical application.
