Skincare Ingredients We Use in Nourish Products
At Nourish London we formulate products to improve the health of your skin. In order to do this we look at the core systems within the skin and combine products to work with them. By combining ingredients in a synergistic manner we are looking to give the one plus one equals three effect - Whereby the combination of the ingredients delivers over and above the individual effects of the ingredients.
Argan Oil
This is why, for example, we use Argan oil across our range frequently with vitamin c. Argan oil contains ferulic acid and ferulic acid when combined with vitamin c delivers superior antioxidant capacity to the skin. More than the individual ingredients would deliver. Our formulation ethic is not just the ingredients we use but optimising the ratios of ingredients to deliver superior results.
Layers of the skin
The skin is made up of layers, each of which performs important functions in protecting your body. The outermost layer of the skin is the stratum corneum also known as the epidermis. This is the skin barrier. A simple image to understand this system is to imagine a brick wall with the bricks being the skin cells and the barrier function being the mortar. This barrier function consists of cholesterol, fatty acids and ceramides.
Natural oils
Many natural oils possess specific compounds with specific activities that make them attractive to keeping the barrier function healthy. These antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti inflammatory and anti itch properties is what influence our choice of oils in our products.
Oils such and argan, macadamia, borage, rosehip, prickly pear and jojoba oil are blended to keep the barrier function in optimum health. This barrier function can easily be disrupted by harsh cleansing, environment damage or medication. By keeping this barrier function healthy we ensure the skin is appropriately hydrated and protected.
Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF)
The skin has a remarkable ability to regulate its moisture content in response to the environment in which you live. It does this by using what is called natural moisturising factor to pull moisture from the the atmosphere into the skin cells and retain moisture there. The Natural Moisturising Factor is made up of amino acids and humectants that are the by products of the protein called filaggrin. The natural moisturising factor draws water from the atmosphere to keep the skin hydrated.
Ingredients such as trehalose and hyaluronic acid are used in our formulas to mimic the skins natural moisturising factor and keep the skin optimally hydrated.
Vitamins
Topical vitamins are an important part of our formulation strategy. Vitamin C is crucial to the development of healthy collagen and the B vitamins are vital to the driving the skins cellular energy. They provide a protective quality to the effects of free radicals on the skin
