Implementing Sustainable Skincare Routines In Our Daily Lives
With Earth day just around the corner (April 22nd), this year's theme is centred around implementing a more sustainable skincare routine in our daily lives. From selecting eco-friendly brands to modifying current practices, sustainability is all about taking small steps to create a more sustainable future for all of us.
As a vegan, cruelty-free, and Soil Association certified brand, Nourish London is dedicated to green clarity and advocating for more sustainable skincare practices. We believe green washing slows progress to truly sustainable solutions.
In this blog, we will delve into ways to enhance your daily skincare routine and contribute to a greener future.
Paying attention to the ingredients found in your skincare products
When it comes to choosing the right skincare brand, there are several factors to consider, and one of the most important ones are : the origin and quality of the ingredients. Using certified organic and tested ingredients can provide safety by reducing risk of possible contaminants. These trace contaminants such as unwanted pesticides can sometimes cause negative skin reactions such as irritation, inflammation, or allergies.
Nourish London remains transparent in its product descriptions and ingredients lists, as we want the customer to make informed purchasing decisions.
It's no secret that many skincare products on the market contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both the skin and the environment. That's why swapping chemical-containing skincare products with brands that steer clear of the use of chemicals could be a very good start towards a more sustainable future.
At Nourish, our Soil Association COSMOS Natural certification guarantees that our products contain at least 98% natural origin ingredients, with no « nasties » like alcohol, parabens, synthetic colours, phenoxyetol, sulphates, mineral oils, silicones etc.
We are committed to providing transparent information by certifying natural, organic, and scientifically formulated ingredients, which means that they are free from harsh chemicals and toxins that can harm your skin and overall health. By doing this, we want to give our customers peace of mind that they are using safe and healthy skincare products.
The importance of packaging
Another important element that you should take into consideration when choosing a sustainable skincare brand is paying attention to the brand's packaging.
We try our best to steer clear of single-use packagings that contribute to the global plastic waste problem and we highly recommended to swap out the unrecyclable products with sustainable ones that can be reused in the long-term.
We believe that sustainable packaging is essential, not an optional luxury, so we take it very seriously. Our outer boxes are made with cardboard that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), who promote ethical management of forests around the world.
Our glass bottles are recyclable and our plastic bottles are 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled), which means they are made from recycled plastic and are recyclable.
There are several small changes that you can incorporate into your daily routine to live a greener lifestyle : the first one could be paying attention to symbols on your product’s packaging to help you make more informed choices (the recycling logo or the green dot symbol indicate that the packaging can be recycled or has been made from recycled material).
You can also replace single-use cotton pads with eco-friendly, reusable bamboo pads to minimise waste, or avoid products containing plastic micro-beads as these can have detrimental effects on marine life and pollute waterways.
Opting for exfoliating products that utilise natural exfoliants, such as the jojoba beads found in our Kale enzymatic exfoliator, can help prevent negative environmental impacts.
If you're interested in discovering brands that align with our values and offer more than just skincare products, you might want to consider Watson and Wolfe's vegan accessories, Cecily's vegan ice creams, or Little by Little and their sustainable jewellery as some of our previous collaborators.
In a nutshell, by making a conscious decision to choose sustainable skincare products, you are making a positive impact on our planet and taking care of yourself at the same time.
It's not only good for your skin but also the environment, what more could you want ?
