Why do we only think of frankincense at Christmas?

Mention Frankincense and most of us will think of the Three wise men and the Christmas story.

But the wise amongst us will know that Frankincense shouldn’t be confined to Christmas  – it is a wonderful ingredient that  can bring anti-ageing skin care benefits the year round.

Also known as Olibanum, Frankincense comes from resin of  the Boswellia sacra tree.

Frankincense  has been valued and traded for more than 5000 years and is shown on the walls of the temple of the Egyptian  Queen Hatshepsut near the Valley of the Kings.

In ancient times, Frankincense was harvested from trees in southern Arabia. The gum was extracted from the tree but this was a dangerous process due to  venomous snakes that lived in the trees. Some of gum of the tree was burnt to drive the snakes away before safe harvesting could take place.

Boswellia Sacra trees  start producing resin when around 8 years old.  Harvesting can take place  2 or 3 times a year but needs to be managed because over-harvesting is known to affect the tree populations  by reducing germination rates. These tree populations are also being affected by conversion to agriculture.

You will find Frankincense in several products in the  Nourish ‘Treatment’ range  because it brings anti-ageing benefits.  It will help to tone and firm the skin whilst promoting  the regeneration of healthy cells;  it helps to balance the water and oil levels in the skin and can reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes.
